Biography

Meet Phyllis Hanson

Background

Dr. Hanson received her M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University studying the Ca2+/calmodulin-activated protein kinase CaMKII together with Dr. Howard Schulman. As a Helen Hay Whitney postdoctoral fellow at Yale University with Dr. Reinhard Jahn, she began her career-long journey exploring the molecular and cellular regulation of organelle structure, function, and trafficking. She launched her independent laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis and was named the Gerty T. Cori Professor of Cell Biology & Physiology in 2016. In November of 2018, she moved to the University of Michigan as Chair of the Biological Chemistry Department. She leads a dynamic research group studying how organelles and membranes that compartmentalize biochemical reactions within the cell are assembled, organized and maintained.
